What is Sensory Play?

Sensory play engages a child’s senses through activities that simulate touch, taste, sight, sound and smell, but it also covers movement, balance, and spatial awareness.

When a child is born, their senses aren’t fully developed and rely on them maturing over time as they transition from a baby, to a toddler, then a preschooler by exploring the sensory world around them. Each new experience through play opens a new door, and helps build nerve connections that grow the architecture of their brain.

Sensory play is so important during a child's growth as it provides children with open ended play to support language development, develop fine and gross motor skills, as well as problem solving skills. It also helps build independent play and confident learners.

Benefits of sensory play include:

  • Developing new connections in a child's brain through play.
  • Encouraging the development of motor skills.
  • Supporting language development as they learn to respond to different stimuli.
  • Building cognitive skills and influencing how your child learns about their world.
  • Developing thinking and problem solving abilities.
  • Encouraging children in their exploration and helping to build independent play and confident learners.
